Domestic violence affects everyone. In the work place, it results in increased absenteeism
and lowered productivity. Family members and friends bear the burden of fear, pain,
and anger for the victims they love. Domestic violence also wreaks havoc in the
lives of children.
How can you help? If someone you know is being abused:
- Let them know you care. Talking may help sort out some of the confusion brought
about by the abuse.
- Maintain an open, non-judgmental attitude.
- Avoid confrontation with your friend’s abuser. Letting the abuser know that
you are aware of their behavior could endanger your friend.
- Use caution. There may be physical danger involved; so carefully consider the
entire situation before offering your home to your friend.
- Call the police if you know that an abusive incident is occurring.
- Encourage your friend to call Heartly House for help and information.
- You may also call Heartly House to learn more about domestic violence and receive
support. Services are available to any Frederick County resident who has been affected
by domestic violence (family members, friends, etc.)
